"Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels that there really is another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it."
     Winnie-the-Pooh, 1926

One of our first projects in 2005 was taking up that feculent carpet runner on the stairs. The Eastlake staircase was one of the principal reasons we fell in love with the house, and we wanted to restore the original hardwood underneath.

One of the reasons we bought this house was the Eastlake staircase.   You can see we're working on restoring the door, too. The white carpet on the stairs was pretty well soiled by dirty shoes, cat hair, and . . .um. . .puppy by-products.

Jerry Sandoz stripped the stairs to the original pine and refinished them.   The finished stairs are lighter than the original stain and Jerry added the trim to compliment the stairs.
