"The indefinable air of not intending to part with
fivers."
Nothing Serious, 1950
Sadly, I have not had reason to update this page in
years. A couple of years back, Tim climbed up on the ladder and pulled off a
piece of siding to see what was under it. We saw the original fish scale
shingles under the siding. We weren't undertaking any external house projects at
the time, so we put the siding back and nursed warm memories of what we'd find
when it all came off.
Fast forward to April, 2009. Our little exterior
wood repair projects blossomed into a bigger project, necessitating the removal
of siding, which necessitated the removal of more siding. Mario and Jaime spent
most of the day pulling off the siding on the south side of the house, showing
the original clapboards and shingles underneath. I couldn't wait to get pictures
and left home over lunch to snap the first couple of shots. These shingles
haven't seen the light of day in at least 50 to 60 years.
Here are some pictures of the work as the project
progresses.

April 2009 Progress

This is as far as the project goes
for now. We've removed one section of siding, restored the original shingles and
clapboards, caulked, and primed the section. It will have to remain like this
until we start again, later in 2009 or in Spring 2010. Keep checking back for
more updates!
